Remote Position Controller Card
Single Axis Servo Positioner for Multi Axis
Systems
Transducer (magnetostrictive technology)
Interface
The Remote
Position
Controller-Transducer
(RPC-T) provides linear positioning using a Temposonics
TM(or compatible) position transducer and a servo valve
Designed
for usein single and multiaxis systems, up to 14 RPC-T's can be
connected
on asingle serial communications channel up to 4000 feet from the host
controller.
The RPC-T utilizes an advanced PID control
algorithm
with programmable ramp and gain parameters to provide accurate,
stableand
responsive positioner performance. The RPC-T utilizes 24 bit
internalcounters
and a 28 MHZ crystal start/stop counter to measure position. Themaximum
length
(and number of recirculations) of the transducer is limitedby
requirement
that the position must be updated at least every 6 millisecondsin order
to
maintain servo control. Typical applications using the RPC-Tboard
realize
a position resolution of 0.0005 inches at a length of 65inches and an
update
interval of approximately 5 milliseconds (using 8recirculations).

transducers

FEATURES----RPC-T SERVO CONTROLLER
- Absolute Position Feed Back---
TheTemposonicsTM (and others such as the Balluff
Micropulse
TM)position transducers interface directly
with
RPC-T: The newer TemposonicsTM
LDTM series,
Temposonics
TMII transducers (with or
without
Digital Personality Module(DPM)), , and No Recirculation Box is
requiredfor
the earliest stylesof TemposonicsTM transducers.
- Analog Servo Control---
Highresolution servo driver circuitry provides control resolution of 13
bits
(approximately 1 part in 8000). This provides smooth ramping for any
system,
including DC motor controlled.
- Commands---Over 45
commandsprovide the ability to configure and monitor the positioner
withminimalsoftware
overhead.
- Command Protocol---
The commandformat is streamlined for speed and accuracy. Protocol
requires
a responsemessage from an addressed RPC-T for every command message
fromthe
host.Protocol provides for immediate execution of such things as
jogsand
emergencystop. Status information is provided from the RPC-T as partof
each
response.A broadcast mode is used to send the same command to allRPC-T
units.
- Communication Interfaces---
TheRPC-T communicates on any RS-232, RS-423, RS-422, or RS-485
compatible
serial interface. Software drive packages are current available for
IBMPersonal
Computers (easy to use DOSTM
based help menus style).
- Watchdog Hydraulic Lock Output---
Incase of a processor failure, the watchdog timer sets the D/A output
tozero,
turns off a status LED and provides a signal to interface to a
usersupplied
hydraulic lock circuit (SSR & valve) to inhibit machine motion.
- Non-volatile Memory---
Parametersmay be changed between moves and are stored in non-volatile
memory
(Upto 10 year Memory Retention). At power up, the RPC-T utilizes the
parameter
set present at the last power down. A continuous memory check
confirmsthat
parameter data is valid at all times.
- Optional Parallel Input Mode---
Inthe parallel mode, the
RPC-T
is loaded serially with ramping parameters and gains from an IBM
TM
Personal Computer (or compatible)or from an optional hand held
terminal
with keypad and 4x20 alphanumericdisplay. The RPC-T will receive
andinterpret
parallel commands froma programmable controller or pushbuttons, via the
systems
eight bit inputport and provide 8 bits of parallel status. The parallel
input
mode isselected by jumper installation.
- Parallel Mode Expansion Board---
ASmall board with screw terminals is available to expand the parallel
mode
so that 24 input bits and 24 output bits are available. This board
allowthe
use of 16 bit parallel position commands from a Programmable
Controller(PLC)
as well a providing capability to interface with lighted
operatorpushbuttons.
The EPROM program furnished with the RPC-T board must matchthe version
of
parallel interface being used.
- Position Limits---
Software positionlimits are included for forward and reverse
directions.Hardware
limitswitch inputs provide additional over travel protection.
Hardwarelimitswitches
may be enabled or disabled by jumpers.
- Trouble Shooting and Diagnostics---
NineLED status indicators for diagnostics and trouble shooting provide
ameansto
locally monitory the operating status of the RPC-T. A rotary
switchselects
up to 16 different system status displays on 8 LED's. The ninthLEDis
used
to indicate that the RPC-T and position transducer are operating.
- Documentation---Ausers
manual, providing detailed descriptions of all hardware and
softwarefeatures
ofthe RPC-T is available with the board.
