How it works, Transducer basics:

These linear displacement transducers consist of a magnetostrictive wire enclosed within a stainless steel tubing.  A donut shaped magnet is fastened to the moving  portion of  the machine (or to a hydraulic cylinder piston) and the stainless  steel rod  is rigidly mounted so that it passes through the donut center of  the magnet.  A pulse of  current is sent through the wire which interacts with  the magnet causing a torsional stress wave to travel along the wire at a rate  of approximately  0.11-inches per microsecond.  At the reference end of the  wire a torsional  transducer detects the pulse return, thus, providing the ability to measure a time interval  between launch and arrival of the pulse.

Typical applications using Digitrons products realize a position resolutionof 0.0005 inches at a length up to 65 inches and an update interval of approximately  5 milliseconds (using 8 recirculations*).

*Note:  Recirculations refers to the number of times that the transducer electronics  circulates the pulses before providing an  output pulse-width signal whose  duration is equal to the total elapsed time  for the number of recirculations  programmed.  A larger number of recirculations  increases measurement resolution.
